Playing Ukulele with Hearing Loss: 5 Tips to Get Started!

Learning the ukulele is pure joy! It’s light, fun, and easy to play.

But what if you have hearing loss? Can you still learn? Absolutely!

Music isn’t just about hearing—it’s about feeling, rhythm, and connection. I’ve put together five simple tips to help you get started with the ukulele, no matter your level of hearing.

Feel the Rhythm Instead of Just Hearing It

Music is more than sound—it’s vibration! Try placing your hand on the body of the ukulele while strumming. You’ll feel the rhythm through your fingers. If you use a speaker or amplifier, turn up the bass a little. The deeper tones create stronger vibrations, making it easier to follow the beat.

Use Visual Cues to Stay in Time

Timing is key when playing music. Since hearing the beat might be tricky, use a flashing metronome or a vibrating metronome watch. You can also follow along with a teacher’s hand movements or tap your foot to keep the rhythm steady.

Learn to Read Chord Diagrams and Tablature

Many ukulele players rely on their ears to pick up songs. But you don’t have to! Chord diagrams and tablature (tab) show you exactly where to place your fingers. Think of them as musical roadmaps. Once you get used to them, playing songs becomes much easier!

I put a strong emphasis on tabs, with visual cues to help players play with a nice sound.

Choose Songs with a Strong Beat

Some songs are easier to play because they have a clear, steady beat. Start with simple rhythms, like reggae or folk songs. These styles are often slower and easier to feel. A good beginner-friendly song is "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley—it has a relaxed groove that’s easy to follow.

Get a Good Big Ukulele

In general, ukuleles aren't that loud.

However, if you get a good quality big ukulele, you can get a louder one.

A tenor size ukulele is the right size for you. It's the biggest ukulele with the common GCEA tuning.

Bigger than that, there's the bariton, but it's tuned differently. It's still a good choice thoug.

Anyway, before buying a ukulele, you should test it for yourself in your local music store.

Amplify it!

Get a luthier to install a piezzo (a microphone for your ukulele), and get an amp. You can thus increase the volume to help you feel, or hear the music.

Play with Others and Enjoy the Process

Music is all about connection.

Playing with friends, family, or even an online group makes learning more fun.

You don’t have to hear every note perfectly—just feeling the rhythm and joining in is enough.

Plus, people love the ukulele’s happy sound, so you’ll always bring smiles to those around you!

You Can Do This!

Conclusion

In this article, we have seen that despite experiencing hearing loss, numerous musicians excel in their music.
