How to Help Kids Create Funny Song Lyrics (a Fun Activity)

ukuleles

Hi, I’m Nicholas, your ukulele teacher.

Kids love creating. They love music. Most of all, they love making something that feels truly their own.

So let’s create a song!

And while we’re at it, let’s get them practising the ukulele too. 😉

Helping children write their first song lyrics can feel tricky at first. You may wonder where to start, what to suggest, or how to keep it fun without putting pressure on them.

It should be simple, really simple!

The good news is that children do not need perfect rhymes or clever ideas. They can begin with something very simple: a frog, a spoon, a funny noise, or one silly sentence.

In this article, I’ll show you an easy activity to help children create playful lyrics step by step. It works well at home, in class, or during a music lesson.

In my ukulele lessons, I’ve seen how quickly children open up when music feels like a game. A few words, one soft C chord, and suddenly their little idea becomes a song.

To help kids create funny song lyrics, ask them to choose a few silly words first: animals, objects, actions, a place, a feeling, and funny sounds. Then turn those words into a tiny story, repeat one catchy line, and sing it with one simple chord or melody. &nsbp;&nsbp;&nsbp; So much fun ahead!!!

Help the child create a short, silly song by choosing a few words first. The goal is not to write perfect lyrics, but to make a playful mini-story that can be sung with music.

Quick version of the activity

What the child writes down

Ask the child to choose and write:

Add a little surprise

To make the song more fun, ask one extra question:

What funny or surprising thing happens?

For example:

Build the mini-story

Use the child’s words to create a tiny story.

Ask simple questions like:

For example, if the child chooses:

You could make:

In the kitchen, late at noon, A frog was jumping with a spoon. A tiger danced with a red balloon, Whoops! They sang a la-la tune.

Add repeated lines

Now help the child choose one or two lines to repeat. This can become the chorus of the song.

Encourage them to include one or more silly sounds in the repeated lines.

For example:

Boom boom, whoops-a-doo, The frog and tiger dance for you!

Or:

La-la-la, here we go, Dancing fast and singing slow!

The repeated part can be:

Sing it with notes or chords

Once the lyrics are ready, add music.

Chords

Play a chord progression from a song you know well.

Or try one of these chord progressions suggested.

One chord is great already. The kid chooses the chord he wants.

Double the chord, double the fun!
Two chords are better and enough to start with, no need for more

You can also try with 3 or 4 chords:

Sing

Try telling your story while playing the chords.

You can:

Keep it simple. The fun comes from the child hearing their own words turn into a real song.

Do not worry if the rhythm is not perfect. At this stage, the goal is confidence, creativity, and FUN!!

Title

Ask the kid to give a title to her or his song.

Simple song shape

A good structure is:

Verse: Tell the funny story.

Chorus: Repeat one or two playful lines with silly sounds.

And that's it. Obviously, the more experienced the kid is in using this song creation framework, the better the structure.

Example:

Verse In the kitchen, late at noon, A frog was jumping with a spoon. A tiger danced with a red balloon, Whoops! They sang a la-la tune.

Chorus Boom boom, whoops-a-doo, The frog and tiger dance for you! Boom boom, whoops-a-doo, Now it’s time to sing it too!

Tip

Let the child say the words out loud before singing them. If the words feel fun to speak, they will usually be easier and more natural to sing.

Example for younger children

The duck goes boom,
The cat says whee,
They dance in the bathroom,
And drink pink tea!

The duck goes boom,
The duck goes boom boom,
The duck goes boom boom, boom-boom-boom

The duck goes boom,
The cat says whee,
They dance in the bathroom,
And drink pink tea!

Example for older children

A dragon lost his sandwich,
A robot stole his shoes,
They searched inside the library,
And sang the sandwich blues.

sandwich blues,
sandwich bluuuuuuuuuuuuuues.

Sum Up

1. Choose the words

Ask the child to write down:

2. Add a funny surprise

Optional:
ask one simple question: What funny or surprising thing happens?
Maybe something gets lost, an object flies away, everyone starts dancing, or one animal makes a silly mistake.

3. Turn the words into a mini-story

Help the child create a few short lines using their words.

4. Create a Chorus

Choose one or two lines to repeat. This repeated part can become the chorus.

Encourage the child to include silly sounds in these lines.

Example:

Boom boom, whoops-a-doo, The frog and tiger dance for you!

5. Add music

Now sing the lyrics with simple notes or chords.

5.a Chords

Play a chord progression from a song you know well.

Or try one of these chord progressions suggested.

5.b Sing

Try telling your story while playing the chords.

Then ask them to redo them, helping them with directins (try to vary the notes you sing, or tell them to say more than one word for each chord played)

6. Title

Ask the kid to give a title to her or his song.

Conclusion

Kids love creating. They love music. Most of all, they love making something that feels truly their own.

That is what this activity is about. With a few funny words, simple sounds, and easy chords, they can create music and write their own song.

I hope this has been helpful today. If the first try feels messy, that is completely fine. A silly song is allowed to be silly.

Try this today for five minutes: choose two animals, one place, and one funny sound. Then sing one small line together.

With a little structure, children can feel free, confident, and creative.
