You can have great fun playing a song with just one downstrum on each beat!
However, some people in your audience could find that repetitive. So you'll probably want to learn slowly new strumming patterns.
You don't need to play that fast, of course. The slower it gets, the more mellow it will sound. Most of the time, it's sounds nice to do it slower than the original.
But the quicker it is, the closer it is to the original, the closer it is from the original feeling.

If you have any more question, feel free to ask me.
Some songs have become almost inseparable from the ukulele because they are warm, simple, and easy to sing with friends.
Here are a few classics:
Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling in Love
These songs work beautifully in small gatherings because they are upbeat songs, they tend to use accessible chords and they use a rather comfortable vocal ranges.
In my experience teaching adults, starting with songs people already love makes practice feel natural and motivating.
The easiest songs usually use just two or three chords and avoid complicated shapes.
A few beginner-friendly examples are:
Happy Birthday
These songs are rhythmically simple and great for building early confidence.
If you’re unsure which chords to start with, you might explore:
"Easy Happy Birthday To You" on Ukulele (in 5 Languages) - Beginner Guide
With my beginner students, I often see that limiting chord variety at the beginning creates faster progress and less frustration.
Many popular summer songs rely on the same famous progression:
I–V–vi–IV
In the key of C, that becomes:
C – G – Am – F
This progression works because it creates emotional movement while staying simple to play.
A few easy examples include:
Let It Be – The Beatles
Inside structured practice, repeating one progression across different songs makes rhythm and chord changes much more fluid.
This is one of the most common beginner challenges.
If you can play the chords but struggle to sing along, try this simple three-step method:
Add melody gently, without increasing tempo, with just downs.
If you'd like to add a strumming pattern: practice the strumming separately first, until it becomes natural.
Then add the lyrics.
Coordination improves when each layer is introduced gradually.
In structured weekly practice, this process becomes much easier because each step is introduced at the right moment, preventing overwhelm.
For most beginners, the ukulele is easier to start with.
| Ukulele | Guitar |
|---|---|
| 4 strings | 6 strings |
| Softer nylon tension | Higher string tension |
| Smaller neck | Wider fretboard |
| Easier first chords | More complex shapes |
Because the ukulele has lighter tension and fewer strings, chord transitions tend to feel more accessible.
For singing, many beginners find the ukulele sits comfortably under the voice without overpowering it.
You can read a deeper comparison here: Ukulele vs Guitar
The simplest way is to follow a clear weekly structure.
Choosing the right key for your voice, limiting chords at the beginning, and working on rhythm gradually removes much of the confusion beginners experience.
Inside the You’Cool’Ele Club, I organise this kind of calm, step-by-step progression for beginners and intermediate players who want steady, structured growth.
